Complete Guide To Instagram Hashtags
Today we are talking about something very important when it comes to maximizing your reach and growing on Instagram: HASHTAGS.
Let’s start at the beginning.
What are hashtags? Hashtags are keywords that Instagram lets users search for. Photos tagged with these keywords will show up when searched.
Why are hashtags important? Hashtags are so important because they give your content the opportunity to be seen by people who aren’t already following you.
For example, if you post a photo without any hashtags your photo will only show up in the feeds of people who are already following you. This is definitely not ideal if you are looking to grow your audience. How can you ever gain new followers if your content is only being shown to your current audience?
However, if you use hashtags then not only will your photo show up in your followers’ feeds, but it will also show up when users search any of the hashtags that you used. If your photo does well, it will appear in the “top posts” section of those hashtags, giving your photo even more exposure.
Obviously hashtags are VERY helpful when it comes to reaching more of an audience, but it’s important to use them correctly in order to get the most out of them.
Here’s five best practices to get you started:
Post your hashtags in the comments of your photo as soon as you post. It can be distracting when you post multiple hashtags in your caption so putting them in your comments will keep them more discreet, while still tagging your photo with these different keywords.
Only use relevant hashtags. For example, don’t use #dogsofinstagram if your picture doesn’t have a dog in it, lol you feel me? It won’t benefit you to tag your photo with hashtags that don’t line up with your content. Users who are searching specific hashtags won’t be interested in your photo if it’s irrelevant.
Tag any brands featured in your post. For example, if you’re wearing jeans from Target in your photo, make sure to tag them in the post and then include Target’s hashtag (go to Target’s Instagram page to see what hashtag they are currently using). Not only will this allow users interested in Target to find your photo but Target will also be able to find your photo and they may want to repost it, which will ultimately widen your photo’s reach.
Use different hashtags on each post. Instagram doesn’t like it when you copy and paste the same set of hashtags on each post. It looks spammy, plus it’s doubtful that the same set of hashtags is always completely relevant to every photo you post. For this reason, make sure to switch it up for each photo.
Use about 20 hashtags max. Instagram allows users to use up to 30 hashtags, however I don’t think they favor users who use all 30 as again, it can come across as spammy. I try to keep my hashtags at around 20 so I can maximize my keyword use while still pleasing Instagram’s algorithm.
That’s all for now! Hopes these tips help tons!
